House of Vampires – Written by Samantha Rendle | Cover Design by Rachel George of OctoSquidDesign.com

We’re proud to show off the second of our Cover Designs for SilverWood Books, this time it’s House of Vampires , written by Samantha Rendle.

Another excellent book by an excellent young Author, and as is the usual with SilverWood Books, it’s getting fantastic reviews from readers, and the cover is getting a lot of praise!

We worked closely with the author using her descriptions of characters and key elements, such as the design of a very important object in the story – the Skeleton Key. We’re very happy to say she was thrilled with the illustrations and design of her book cover! And we’re very proud of it too!

Synopsis:

“What would happen if this portal was opened?” Pete asked. “Would it really be that bad?”
“For humans and enemies, yes,” Frederick said. “All Hell would break loose. Earth as we know it would crumble and be rebuilt into Hell’s kingdom.”

Pete is a fourteen year old vampire who wakes up in a mansion with no idea who he is and no memories. He soon discovers that he’s the keeper of a skeleton key, which opens the door leading to another realm: the realm containing vampires, demons and other fearsome creatures. Realising that he needs to keep the key away from the door and the vampires who want the door open, he flees and joins the fight against them, joining a rebel group called the Hunters. He makes three new friends: Annie, Frank and Stella, and when one of his friends is kidnapped he has no choice but to go back to the house of vampires, and back to the danger he ran away from…

Praise for the book:

“Let me first start by saying, I love the book cover of House of Vampires, that is one of the main reasons I decided to read the book. It is very creepy looking and the images look to be hand-drawn. Besides the cover I very much enjoyed whole story behind this book. Although it is another Vampire book, and I feel Vampires are being overdone right now. House of Vampires has a unique story-line and many twists along the way which makes for a fun, and enjoyable Vampire book. ” Review by Rebecca S. Voigts - Amazon.com review

“Debut British author, Samantha Rendle infuses new life into an over saturated genre.Rendle’s book, House of Vampires is young adult paranormal fiction written by a young author, which is rare in today’s publishing world. Rendle takes vampire mythology and adds her own spin, making her novel unique and different. The tone of the book is dark, but not oppressive. The characters are complex and full of surprises. Readers will find themselves transfixed by the vampire world that Rendle as created.” DebsBookBlog

“This book is an exciting new twist on a popular genre. A whole new world is created and instantly draws you in. Pete is instantly likeable; you feel sorry for him, and then cheer him on. He is so much like your average teen – unsure of who and what he is but trying to do his best, you can’t help but feel for him. He has a strong sense of right and wrong and has to make some tough choices, but this made me like him all the more.” Becky’s Barmy Book Blog

The Black Banner – Written by Helen Hart | Cover Illustration by Rachel George of OctoSquidDesign.

We are very proud to finally get around to posting a little about our first cover illustration for SilverWood Book’s young-adult fiction pirate epic, The Black Banner!

This book has had some EXCELLENT reviews and we reccomend you check it out!

Synopsis:

“Set sail on the high seas of adventure with Becky Baxter and her band of pirates! A swashbuckling pirate novel for young teens. Penniless Becky Baxter crops her hair, dresses in breeches, and leaves the dangerous backstreets of Bristol for a life of adventure and fortune on the high seas. But she quickly discovers that there are far more dangerous enemies than her drunken Ma and evil Mr Crudder… Pirates!”

Praise for the book:

“Not since Treasure Island have we had such a fast- paced swashbuckling yarn come out of Bristol, and this time the hero’s a heroine! With excitement and plot twists a plenty, Robert Louis Stevenson would have been proud. Look out for some ghosts from Bristol’s rich maritime past…”
Mark Steeds, Secretary – Long John Silver Trust, Bristol

“The perfect combination of Treasure Island and Pirates of the Caribbean for young girls… the author captures the spirit and sound of the period as she whisks the reader back in time and immerses them in an era of upheaval and adventure. The characters are richly drawn and the dialogue rings true.”
Patricia Rockwell, author & publisher

“Sail away on a swashbuckling adventure aboard the Bonny Marie with young Billy Baxter – who is not the boy he pretends to be! The Black Banner has it all – pirates, plunder, and the pleasure of a rollocking good read!”
Helen Hollick, author of the Sea Witch series

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Helen Hart has written novels under various pen-names including Maya Snow (Sisters of the Sword Bks 1 & 2) and Sebastian Rook (Vampire Plagues Bks 4, 5 & 6). This is the first book to feature her own name on the cover!

The OctoSquid! Everyone always gives us a puzzled look when we tell them our name “What’s an OctoSquid? A made up word, right?”

WRONG! It’s actually a real thing! And a really cool thing! So we fished around for some info and came across this article, enjoy!

Curious creature caught off Keahole Point

The animal, dubbed an “octosquid,” is found off the Big Isle

By Brittany P. Yap / byap@starbulletin.com

It’s a squid, it’s an octopus, it’s … a mystery from the deep.

What appears to be a half-squid, half-octopus specimen found off Keahole Point on the Big Island remains unidentified today and could possibly be a new species, said local biologists.

The specimen was found caught in a filter in one of Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority’s deep-sea water pipelines last week. The pipeline, which runs 3,000 feet deep, sucks up cold, deep-sea water for the tenants of the natural energy lab.

“When we first saw it, I was really delighted because it was new and alive,” said Jan War, operations manager at NELHA. “I’ve never seen anything like that.”

The natural energy lab is a state agency that operates Hawaii Ocean Science and Technology Park in Kailua-Kona, adjacent to one of the steepest offshore slopes in the Hawaiian Islands.

According to Richard Young, an oceanography professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the specimen tentatively belongs to the genus Mastigoteuthis, but the species is undetermined.

War, who termed the specimen “octosquid” for the way it looked, said it was about a foot long, with white suction cups, eight tentacles and an octopus head with a squidlike mantle.

The octosquid was pulled to the surface, along with three rattail fish and half a dozen satellite jellyfish, and stayed alive for three days. According to War, the lab usually checks its filters once a month, but this time, it put a plankton net in one of the filters and checked it two weeks later.

The pitch-black conditions at 3,000 feet below sea level are unfamiliar to most but riveting to scientists who have had the opportunity to submerge. The sea floor is full of loose sediment, big boulders and rocks, and a lot of mucuslike things floating in the water, which are usually specimens that died at the surface and drifted to the bottom.

“It’s quite fascinating,” War said. “When you get below 700 feet, it’s a totally different world. Lots of fish have heads like a fish and a body like an eel. There are fish floating in a vertical position, with the head up, and don’t move unless they’re disturbed.”

Christopher Kelley, program biologist for the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory, went to the natural energy lab Tuesday to pick up the preserved octosquid, rattail fish and jellyfish, which had been stored in a freezer, and brought them back to UH-Manoa’s oceanography department.

“It’s a beautiful squid. It’s a gorgeous ruby red color,” Kelley said. “We really enjoy these little mysteries that come up.”

Also during Kelley’s visit to NELHA yesterday, he and War talked about a more formal sampling program to search for other deep-sea critters. War said their goal is to sample the intake screen more often and capture animals alive and study them in captivity.

“This opens up a whole new area of research that UH can be involved with,” War said.

In October, NELHA will be checking its deep-sea pipelines, something that usually happens every eight to 10 years, because it is worried that something might have happened to them during the earthquakes in October.

“If it’s a new species, (NELHA) would like to name it,” War said. “But that is sort of the honor of whoever classifies it.”
